SLC Officials: More Passports Means a Boost in Local Economy

The St. Lucie County Clerk's office issued 500 more passports from January through May, totaling over 1670 so far in 2013.

The clerk sees the increase as a sign of the local economy stabilizing; St. Lucie County has seen a large improvement in its unemployment rate, at 8.9% compared with 10.7% at this time last year.

County leaders say more jobs mean more people may have more extra income to be used for traveling overseas.

A passport takes an average of four to six weeks to be made.
