FAU Teaching "Stand Your Ground" Course

Florida Atlantic University is offering a course that concentrates on the state's ``stand your ground'' self-defense law.

The course is being offered during fall semester by FAU's School of Public Administration at the Boca Raton campus.

Program coordinator Richard Mangan says national publicity surrounding the recent George Zimmerman trial in central Florida helped spur the creation of the course. It's being offered as an elective.

Florida's self-defense law generally removed a person's duty to retreat if possible in the face of danger. It was the first of its kind in the nation when passed in 2005. Now, about two dozen states have similar laws.

Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges last month in the shooting of Miami teenager Trayvon Martin.  While "stand your ground" was not invoked by Zimmerman's attorneys at the trial, those wishing to repeal the law used the attention garnered by the trial to push for such a repeal.

Just this week, Florida's legislature announced that they would not be gathering for a special session to deal with the self defense law.
